One of Donald Trump’s favorite countries just told him he is a fool and wrong. Imagine that! During this past campaign, Donald Trump has called climate change something “made up by China for China.” He claims China made up climate change to hurt American manufacturing.
Well, China’s Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin reminded us that it was Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush that first brought up the issue of climate change back in the 1980s. He also explicitly said it was not made up by China.
However, if you think that is going to change Trump’s mind, you are wrong. You only need to look at who’s on his transition team. He has turned to climate change denier Myron Ebell and fossil fuel lobbyist Mike McKenna to help with transition work at the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy.
Trump has said over and over that he plans to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement. In Trump’s own words this is what he thinks about climate change:
This very expensive GLOBAL WARMING bullshit has got to stop. Our planet is freezing, record low temps, and our GW scientists are stuck in ice
The facts just show that as usual Donald Trump has no clue about anything. It has already been reported that 2016 will end up being the warmest year on record. That exceeds 2015 which exceeded 2014 which exceeded 2013. Well, you get the point.
Sometime this century, if climate keeps warming at the pace it is, we will see huge swaths of our country go under water. Florida, whose stupid Governor Rick Scott, has made even using the term “climate change” unlawful by state employees is going to be hit the hardest. It is estimated that at least a full third of the state will be flooded by rising sea levels.
Other parts of the country will also suffer. In New York City, Trump Tower will probably have water at least in the lobby of the building. We will lose large areas of our eastern, Gulf, and western coasts. Places like New Orleans and Houston may disappear forever.
This is only the easy part of climate change problems. Climate change will also bring droughts. It will also cause weather fluctuations so places on the planet get a full year’s worth of rain in just a few hours. It is already happening in this country alone.
Droughts mean famine. If countries cannot feed their people, real problems will occur. Our own Department of Defense says that Climate Change is a major security problem facing our country. When countries people go hungry, war is inevitable.
Wars are fought for a lot of reasons, but gaining natural resources is the primary reason for most wars. That means we cannot pretend that climate change is not real. We must do something now in order to bring it under control.
We are already seeing health problems associated with climate change. Respiratory problems like asthma have increased. That means health care costs will rise even quicker as this problem explodes.
In response to climate change Trump has also said he would cut all federal spending for climate change research, cleaner technologies and aid for communities already threatened by climate impacts. In case you haven’t heard already, there are communities on small islands across the country that have needed to be moved because of rising sea levels. Apparently, to make his point, Trump doesn’t think the government should help these people and we should just let them drown.
Look, I’m old. I could take the view that “well it won’t affect me. I will probably be gone by the time things get bad.” However, unlike our President-elect, I refuse to stick my head in the sand and pretend it is not my problem. It is my problem because I have children and grandchildren. I also have respect for all future generations to come after me.
That means it is our duty to ensure that the planet we live on can continue to give us the resources like water, rain, and food to sustain our lives. Anything less is totally immoral and inhuman.
There has been a lot of talk about the so-called millennial Generation taking more responsibility in elections. I say that it is more of my generation’s responsibility to speak up about crises like climate change. It is our responsibility to “lead by example” as athletes say, to stop climate change and force our government to do something before it is too late.
If the older generations take the lead, the younger generations will follow. They will understand that they are not alone. The will understand that their voice is not being ignored.
In answer to Trump’s claim that it will hurt American manufacturing, you are dead wrong. The largest expenditure of manufacturing next to manpower is energy costs. If manufacturing plants converted to clean renewable energy to power their manufacturing, they would be able to make their products at a lower cost than relying on the current power grid.
The return on investment for companies to convert to clean energy would be short and they would begin making larger profits without even having to increase prices. That is not harming manufacturing, that is helping manufacturing.
But, we are also confronted by huge special interests. All across the country utility companies have been introducing legislation that would make it harder and more expensive for home owners to convert to solar power for their homes. The goal is to keep home owners reliant on utility companies for power and protect their profits.
As a result, many states now have laws that make it nearly impossible to convert your home’s power to solar. Additionally, banks are helping the utility companies. They don’t like handing out mortgages to solar-powered homes. They say there aren’t enough “comparison” properties to properly value the property. Now, that is all bullshit.
The country and indeed the world are facing potentially serious problems. Drought, more common severe weather, famine, drinking water drying up, and potential war because of climate change.
Sometimes I wonder if Trump is so against the idea of climate change because he knows that if U.S. manufacturers convert to clean and cheaper energy, he won’t be able to be competitive with his products being made overseas. Maybe he is just that afraid that he would have to make his products right here in this country.
In either case, he has shown he has no clue, again, about what he is talking about. He is a complete idiot, and unfortunately, we chose him to run our country. A decision I am afraid everyone will regret very quickly.
In the meantime, I suggest that if you own any property along any of our coasts, you sell it off now. In a few years it will be worthless due to flooding caused by sea level rises caused by climate change which Trump and Republicans claim is a hoax.
