One week from today we will finally end this maddening election. We will either have a President Hillary Clinton as our first female President, or we will have President Donald Trump as our first openly nut cake President.
This election has been like none before it. All of the rules of decorum and politics have been thrown out the window. However, we have seen it coming for years, we just ignored the symptoms and now we have the disease.
It is extremely hard for any rational person to understand how so many people support a candidate who openly flaunts his misogynistic behavior. I keep remembering that now infamous photo of Gary Hart with a woman sitting on his lap on a private boat. The woman was not his wife and it basically killed any chances of him becoming the nominee of his party.
On the other hand, we have Donald Trump bragging on tape about groping various women by the privates and about how he likes walking into the Miss Teen Universe dressing room full of naked teen-age women. Yet, somehow that photo of Gary Hart was far more disturbing to the American public than these tapes.
We have heard Donald Trump say our election system is “rigged” against him and that there is cheating going on. Yet, the only person arrested for in-person voter fraud in this election is a Trump Supporter in Iowa who admittedly voted twice for her candidate. And, it is Donald Trump who told his supporters in Colorado to get another ballot if they already mailed in their ballot. In other words, vote twice.
On the other side, what do we have? We have emails and Benghazi. The candidate has been hounded by her bad choice of using a private email server while Secretary of State. That is not a “crime” as Trump has stated over and over. As for Benghazi there is “no smoking gun” there either.
Both of these “scandals” have been investigated and investigated and investigated and….. The results? Nothing! Since the vast majority of these “investigations” have been conducted by Republicans in the House of Representatives who are desperately trying to find “something” against her, you would expect they would find something. But, no nothing.
We keep hearing Trump say “Hillary should be in jail for ‘deleting’ thousands of emails” subpoenaed by Congress. If that is true, then Trump and many of his organization’s lawyers should also be in jail for destroying thousands of records and emails when they were ordered to turn them over to courts hearing suits against them.
The Trump organization has a long history of destroying and/or hiding records and emails to delay court actions against them. The object was to force the people suing them to spend too much money and hopefully bankrupt them before the case went to court and they would win by default.
We can even talk about common civility, or lack thereof. Trump supporters have been rude to say the least. However, they have been egged on by their hero. Statements from the stage like “knock the hell out of him” when referring to protesters has resulted in violence at his rallies.
His constant railing against the media has caused real problems for the news reporters covering his rallies. There have been verbal threats against journalists. Vandalism done to news vans and equipment. Threatening notes left on journalists tables. And, Trump make it easy to find the media since he corrals them into pens at his rallies.
Many news organizations were blacklisted from his events. He has claimed that the freedom of the press should not include a shield from suing them if he doesn’t like as story they print. He wants to loosen the freedom of speech so much that he would be able to sue a newspaper simply because they said he was wearing a blue tie when he says he was wearing a green tie.
Then of course we have the down ballot candidates. Imagine if you were to walk into an interview for a job and told the interviewer that if the same person remained the CEO you would not do the work you were hired to do because you disagreed with his views.
I don’t suppose you would expect to get the job. However, that is exactly what Republican candidates for Senate are telling their constituents. If they are elected and Hillary Clinton is elected, they won’t do their job just because Clinton is elected as President.
You hear it all of the time especially when it comes to filling the open spot on the Supreme Court. Republicans are saying that they will keep the seat open indefinitely if Clinton is elected because she won’t nominate someone as conservative as they would want.
The party is openly telling the American people they will only do the job we send them to do if we elect Trump as President. In my whole lifetime, I have never heard such bullshit before. Until this year it was completely unheard of as a strategy to get elected. Talk about whining brats sitting in the corner holding their breath until they get what they want.
Our country has never seen an election like this one. Hopefully, we will never see one like it again, ever. We are watching a political party slowly disintegrate before our eyes. They can’t seem to help themselves.
On the other hand, they have sown the seeds of their own destruction for years. The lack of policies, the lack of vision, and the “blame others” philosophy they have taken ahold of to win elections has meant they could not last forever. This election is showing just how bad it has gotten on the right.
Unlike the current Republican Party, the country is far more “liberal” than they would want. Over 70 percent of the American people are in favor of the Second Amendment, but they want the gun show and internet loopholes closed so everyone purchasing a weapon must go through background checks. They like the idea of owning a gun, they just don’t like the idea of people with criminal records, or mental health problem, or terrorists being able to purchase guns whenever they want.
Over 75 percent of Americans do not want Roe v. Wade overturned. They believe that women have a right to make their own decisions when it comes to their pregnancy. They do not believe the government should meddle in these tough decisions.
Over 80 percent of Americans favor same-sex marriage. The bans on same-sex marriage have been overturned, and Americans are perfectly fine with that decision. Plus, they don’t believe a business should be allowed to discriminate against same-sex couples who are just trying to but a bloody cake to celebrate their marriage.
Over 80 percent of Americans do believe that “all men are created equal”. That includes women as part of that “all men” statement. They believe that a woman should be paid the same amount of money a man makes for doing the exact same job.
Over 80 percent of Americans believe in climate change and that man is the biggest contributor to our changing climate. They want something to be done to save our planet. Unlike the officials and politicians in the Republican Party, the American people can read and understand science when it is explained to them.
Over 80 percent of Americans believe that “freedom of religion” means we have a right to believe in and follow any religion we desire. Or, to not follow a religion at all. They believe that it does not mean we have a right to discriminate against anyone who does not believe what we believe, live the way we live, or to ban a religion from immigrating to this country.
Yet the Republican Party clings to old-fashioned ideas that have passed by years and years ago. They do not understand or are not willing to understand that countries and people move forward not backwards. As a result, all the while they claim to “only do what the people want” they keep ignoring the people.
Their standard-bearer this year has been holding at roughly 41 percent of the vote. I am amazed it is that high. The only thing that keeps it around 41 percent is the years of “investigations” that have caused a total hatred of Hillary Clinton. But, I dare say if you asked people why they hate her so much, you won’t get a clear answer that doesn’t include a mountain of innuendos with no proof.
Is that what our political process has become? Are we more interested in hating someone than we are in seeing what is best for our country? Do we make our political decisions based on unproven 20 second sound bites? Is that the legacy we want to leave our next generations?
It is said that politics like all things run in cycles. If that is true, then let’s hope that this election will end the horrible cycle that we have found ourselves in and start a new cycle. But, it won’t happen on its own. We The People must stand up and start doing our job as citizens and pay attention to what is going on. We The People can no longer remain in the status quo and watch our country deteriorate with the Republican Party.
Those three little words “We The People” are the strongest, most inclusive, and most unifying words all democracies need to be functional. When we allow politicians to place us in an “us against them” mentality, we all lose. Especially when that “us against them” means we are fighting each other.
In one week our election will be over. The future of our democracy and our country will be set in motion. The question is are we going to settle for “us against them” or are we going to stand up as “We The People” and move forward.
It is your voice that will decide. It is your duty to vote. If you honor the veterans, you will vote.
