I know that it is odd to be talking about Phil Robertson with an election coming up. But, you must remember it is people like Phil Robertson who has helped people like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz to become viable in today’s politics. So, in order to fully understand the Republican crazies, we need to look at people like Phil more often.
In case you have forgotten old Phil, he is the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty clan. You know, the family who is living high off the hog from Grandpa’s duck call gizmo. The family that was clean-shaven and looking like other “normal” people until they decided to open up their own Reality TV show.
Phil Robertson has made it his ambition to become our new “savior” for the Conservative Christian Cult. And, as we know, he has said some truly disgusting, disturbing, and stupid things. He kind of fell off the grid recently, probably because of Trump. But, he is baaaack!
Over the weekend, Robertson appeared at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver. He had his usual stupid remarks to start out with, but came up with a brilliant scheme to “prove” Jesus existed. He started out by promising to “never use a woman’s bathroom”. That is good news, especially since he never has claimed to be a transgender woman.
And, of course he railed, screamed, and whined about the Supreme Court’s decision to make same-sex marriage legal. One of his most loved topics. Phil can’t give a speech unless he bashes homosexuals in one way or the other.
The most bizarre topic came up when he offered “proof” of Jesus. Get ready for it – The Calendar! That is right, we now know that Jesus existed simply because of the calendar and we never knew that before! “It is 2,016 years since Jesus showed up, right?” he said. “So don’t tell me he wasn’t here.”
But that wasn’t enough, he went on:
By the way, if your calendar is dated of all the human beings who have ever walked on the Earth, and your calendar is dedicated and predicated to just one of ’em, evidently something rather large went down back then.
The family has often used the calendar as “proof” of their faith. Si Robertson, Phil’s brother, said:
There’s no such thing as an atheist. I’m serious, because there’s too much documentation. Our calendars are based on Jesus Christ. Whether you believe in him or not, every time you sign your calendar, you add down the day’s date, you’re saying he’s here, OK? That’s documented.
I would like to offer up some knowledge to the Robertson’s. First, the calendar they like to cite as their “proof” of the existence of Jesus was created by the Catholic Church, an organization the Robertson’s are not all that fond of.
Second, if you take a very close look at the months, ten of the twelve months in the year come from the Roman calendar. The Roman’s had a ten month calendar and the months were named after their gods.
Third, the calendar is off by four to seven years. It seems someone made a mistake and the birth of Jesus took place before our calendar actually starts. Finally, just to expose it as a mistake, according to the “scriptures’ the Robertson’s love so much, it would seem unlikely that Jesus was born in December. Rather the evidence points to his birth in the spring.
Shepherds did not tend their flocks in the fields in the winter. They tended their locks in the field in the spring. December was chosen so the Church could usurp a pagan holiday that month and “Christianize” it.
You may be asking yourself why this is important. It is important because groups like the Western Conservative Summit sees fit to have this crazy person as a prime speaker at their events. It is important because people actually listen to people like Phil Robertson and actually believe their hogwash.
The end result of all of this nonsense is the Presumptive Nominee for the Republican Party to run for President of the United States is Donald Trump! It isn’t the “establishment” Republicans who gave us Trump. It is people like Phil Robertson with their fanciful dreams of what is right and what is wrong.
In their “perfect little world” they are always right and the rest of us are always wrong. If they need to stoke the flames of hate and bigotry to make their point, so be it. In Donald Trump they have found their “savior”.
And that is the danger we face as we move deeper into the elections. It isn’t just the Donald Trumps we need to fear. It is the fanatics like Phil Robertson and his “pick and choose” agenda he wishes to force on the rest of the world.
That is why this election is so important not just at the Presidential level, but at all levels of government. There are too many places where people like Phil Robertson are in charge, and they need to go.
Otherwise, the “shirts” will keep marching along.
