Since the terrorist attack in Orlando, the blame game has heated up. Once again the war hawks are spreading their wings in hopes of causing some kind of invasion somewhere in the middle east. They can’t wait for the next fight, regardless of whom it is against. Well, that is regardless of which Muslim Country we go to war against.
John McCain yesterday said that President Obama was “directly responsible for the Orlando attacks”. He sounded more like Donald Trump than Donald Trump who only “hinted” that the president was a closet Jihadist. McCain quickly backtracked on his comments saying he misspoke. What he was really saying was that the President’s “policies” led to the attack because he “allowed” ISIS to come into being.
What was his evidence? Well, the President removed all of our soldiers from Iraq. He simply withdrew our forces from Iraq instead of staying until McCain figured it was safe. What he didn’t say was that the U.S. was negotiating with Iraq about keeping forces there even before Obama took office. The Iraqis refused to sign any agreement that would leave our troops in the country. So, according to international law, we had no basis to keep forces in a foreign country that didn’t want us there.
President Obama was very willing to keep some troops in Iraq after the drawdown. Iraq didn’t want us there because their own people saw us as and invasion force and wanted their country back. That is McCain’s reason for the rise if ISIS. The President refused to ignore the Iraqi people and their government and just keep forces in a foreign country.
In the meantime, this President has continued the “drone war” against terrorists across the globe. Thousands of terrorists have been killed in these drone attacks. In reality, more terrorists have been killed by this administration that any administration before it. I am not in favor of these drone attacks, but they do happen. I guess killing terrorists when they can be found isn’t a good enough “policy” for McCain and the Republican Party.
Senator Lindsey Graham said the other day that the FBI should not have closed the investigation into Mateen, the shooter. He thinks that if you are investigated by the FBI for any terrorist connections, you should have a permanent “shadow” by the FBI for as long as you live. He doesn’t say where the money or the manpower for such shadowing will come from, but it must happen.
Senator Ted Cruz raised his ugly head again yesterday. The man who read Green Eggs and Ham on the Senate Floor just to bring attention to himself in a fight against the Affordable Care Act said the filibuster by Democrats about gun control was “simply a political show”. Well he knows all about political shows.
He also said that Mateen should not have had his case closed. He believes that if you say anything that remotely sounds un-American, you should be followed around by the FBI just like Graham thinks. The FBI closed the case against Mateen because they found no evidence that he broke any laws or was about to break any laws.
Republicans across the board are calling for Muslims to be placed under surveillance. They want surveillance of Mosques. They want data gathering against all Muslims just to make sure they aren’t being “radicalized”. They want to ban Muslims from immigrating to this country. They want you to believe that all Muslims are terrorists.
There is a small, what some may call insignificant, problem with all of this. It is call the Constitution of the United States of America. You know, the very same document Republicans love so much. The problem is that our Constitution lays out procedures and laws that must be followed by law enforcement while gathering evidence of a crime.
According to this nagging document, law enforcement officers cannot search someone without a warrant. They cannot enter your home without a warrant. They cannot go through your emails or phone records without a warrant. So, the answer for Republicans is to allow “warrantless searches” of Muslims. Easy-peasy!
And, since the current administration will not break the law in order to track down these Muslim Terrorists, the President is “clouded in Political Correctness”. That is the problem, and that along with the idea that the President won’t say “radical Islamic terrorism” is exactly why we have not destroyed terrorism across the world.
When it comes to Muslims, even U.S. Citizens who are Muslims, we cannot allow that pesky document called the Constitution to get in the way of hate. Forget that the document says Muslims have a right to worship as they choose. Forget that the document says they are to be free from unreasonable search and seizure. Forget they have a right to privacy. Surely the Constitution didn’t include Muslims. They aren’t Christian, after all.
Have we forgotten history so easily? People like McCain, Graham, and yes, me, are children of what was called the “Greatest Generation” because they fought a world war against fascism to save democracy. How did fascism come to be in so many countries in the world? It came into being because of fear and hate. It came into being because of the blame game.
The result of the rise of fascism was that over 50 million people around the world were killed in the most brutal, violent, vicious war ever fought. Almost all of Europe and many parts of Asia were totally destroyed in that war. Yet, here we are today witnessing the rise of fear and hate again. We are seeing a whole major Political Party in our own country telling us we can ignore the Constitution as long as the victims are Muslim.
Muslims are the new evil of the world. Muslims have replaced the Jews as the scapegoat for all of the world’s problems. Of course the disabled, mentally ill, and the LGBT community are still part of that Muslim Conspiracy so they must go too. Because Muslims are such bad people, we can ignore the Constitution when it comes to them. We can invade their homes. We can bug their mosques. We can search through their data without a warrant. We can follow them around because, well, they are Muslims.
If you don’t agree with these fine Constitution loving people, you are part of the problem as well. If you believe that you can fight terrorism with smarts and not have to violate the rights afforded under the Constitution, then you are stupid and don’t know what you are talking about. If you believe that doing something to keep assault rifles from the hands of suspected terrorists, or anyone for that matter, you are a terrorist sympathizer.
If you won’t go around shouting “radical Islamic terrorist” at the top of your lungs, you are obviously in league with them. Don’t you know, if you constantly say “radical Islamic terrorism” those terrorists will all die from fright? All of those drone strikes won’t be needed anymore. Just utter the words “radical Islamic terrorism” and they will all go away.
The real problem here is just how quickly these Republicans who love the Constitution so much are willing to scrap all of the protections laid out in the document when they see shadows under their beds. The problem is that we cannot survive as a democracy if we scrap the Constitution just because some people are afraid of their own shadows.
The fact is this country has survived because of the Constitution and all of the rights it affords our citizens. It survives because we have millions of men and women who are willing to protect it from all enemies, foreign and domestic. It survives because the Constitution is not some pipe-dream, it is a living, breathing document designed to grow with our country.
Yet to the Republican Party today none of that matters. The only thing that matters is that they gain more power. The only thing that matters is that they make you afraid. They make you hate. They terrify you to the point that you are willing to follow them down the path to fascism.
That, my friends, is our politics of today. How do you like it so far? Because if you like it, it will get worse and you may find yourselves in their crosshairs next. How will you like it then?
And the “shirts” keep marching along!
