Interesting story today about a man who’d lived a remarkable and admirable life: Frank Buckles lied about his age to get into the Army at 16, at the outbreak of WWI. He drove ambulances in the war, then served as a POW guard. After the war he took a job traveling to see the world, and was caught up in Manila by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Day; he spent the war in a Japanese civilian prisoner camp, shrinking to less than 90 pounds under the brutal treatment. He survived the war, and later owned his own farm and raised a family. He died this past weekend at the age of 110 – the last surviving WWI veteran in the US.
Here’s Frank two years ago, at the age of 108:
What strikes me, however, is how much he looks like another of America’s prominent decrepit elderly war veterans.
Here’s John McCain three years ago, reputedly 36 years younger at the time than the dead man above:
John, it’s time to take a well-earned rest.
