A “rising star” of the GOP has just institutionalized bigotry:
McDonnell (R) on Feb. 5 signed an executive order that prohibits discrimination "on the basis of race, sex, color, national origin, religion, age, political affiliation, or against otherwise qualified persons with disabilities," as well as veterans.
It rescinds the order that Gov. Tim Kaine signed Jan. 14, 2006 as one of his first actions. After promising a "fair and inclusive" administration in his inaugural address, Kaine (D) added veterans to the non-discrimination policy – and sexual orientation.
And it is bigotry. It is undeniable that homosexuals face discrimination because of who they are. And now a rising star of the GOP has deliberately taken away discrimination protections form homosexuals. It can serve no purpose other than rank bigotry. The governor has declared open season on the jobs of homosexuals by explicitly refusing to include homosexuals in his executive order. It is a modern day “will no one fire me these meddlesome gays?” moment, one that should sicken decent people everywhere. There can be no justification for refusing to protect people from job discrimination other than the kind of festering, mindless hatred that is the moral equivalent of a septic wound on the soul.
Homophobia today, homophobia tomorrow, homophobia forever, eh, McDonnell? George Wallace and Bull Connor would be so proud.
