Three Technical Questions

January 3, 2006 by Kevin

  1. Ipod Help. I bought my wife an iPod for Christmas, and she loves it. She does not, however, love iTunes as it seems that it doesn’t have as much of the kind of music that she enjoys as other services do. Rhapsody, in particular, has a selection that matches her taste. However, when we use the Rhapsody service, we can only play the song on the iPod one time. The song doesn’t disappear, it just doesn’t play. I can find nothing on this problem. Any else seen this issue?
  2. WordPress 2.0. Is it worth the upgrade, especially considering that I already use Spam Karma and do not need the advanced user management?
  3. Microsoft Word. MS Word opens all new documents in a separate window. I hate this. I am pretty confident that I cannot change this behavior in MS Word, so does anyone know of a word processor (not Wordperfect — I had it and it ran slow and buggy on my machine) that does allow for multiple documents in one window? Or a third party tool that will force MS Word to open new docs inside one window?

Item 3: You can change an option in Word so that the documents open up in the same task window. Tools/Options/View uncheck the box next to “Windows in taskbar”

if you’re using one of Rhapsody’s music subscription services, the iPods don’t support that

Athoth, if that were the case, then I wouldn’t think it would have played even the one time. We don’t use the subscription service, either. I just purchased a song straight from their music store.

We aren’t using the subscription service –these are songs we have bought outright.

re: Dawn’s comment, true; so I wonder if it’s a digital rights management issue. I went on a couple of Mac forums and didn’t see any postings regarding this issue, but if I find something, I’ll let you know.

Hey, I have a question for you – a few weeks ago when you posted the annoying video of the house with holiday lights, what was the code you used for it to play within the browser itself?

    Thanks.

Athoth, that’s what I suspect. I tried playing the tunes I got from Rhapsody directly on my computer to see what would happen, and iTunes popped up and said my computer wasn’t authorized to play them, but that I could authorize it. I did, then tried again and got the same damned pop up, telling me I needed to authorize my computer.

    I used the tag.

That shoudl be [ object ] tag. Replace the brackest with less than and greater than signs.

I’ve used Apple products for years and love them, but at times the company can be a major pain.

Two basic questions, just to cover the obvious: are you using Rhapsody 3.0? and is the firmware on your iPod up-to-date? (Apple updated some iPod’s firmware at the end of last year so even tho this is a new iPod, it may have been shipped with the previous firmware)

    Kevin,

So, you are saying to use the ‘object’ tag around the link for the intended video clip?

Great! I’ll try it. I have a video I want to share with family but hate when the link simply opens a new window – I rather embed it within the website.

    Thanks again :)

yes on the rhapsody 3.0, and as far as i can tell on the firmware.

    Wacko

No, its not that simple. Email me and I will walk you through the process. I program for a living and sometimes forget that I am not talking to other programmers when I discuss technical matters :)

    Kevin,

Thanks for the offer, but I worked it out. I ended up using YouTube to host my family video and they provided an embed script (with object tags) to use.

    Thanks again!
