The Corwin Amendment, permanently preserving the institution of slavery, did not pass, but never officially died. Technically, it could still pass. Technically, so could some other proposed Amendments once thought dead, including, possibly, the ERA. Hmmm . . .

The Hate Amendment: Old Sour Wine in New Ugly Bottles
Posted in Politics on February 27, 2004 | 1 Comment »
Jack Balkin, a Yale Law School professor who runs an interesting legal-commentary blog (“Balkinization“), offers an interesting historical parallel to the Hate Amendment. Some critics of the anti-gay amendment have noted that it would, if passed, be the first Constitutional amendment ever to explicitly deny civil rights to an entire category of people – in [...]
Light Blogging

Heck with it. I’m not going to change anybody’s mind any time soon. So rather than ranting about politics, I’m going to Puerto Rico to drink lots of Don Q and soak up some sun. (The annoying sound you hear at the PR site is a tree-frog called a “Coqui,” native only to Puerto Rico, [...]
The Deed Is Done

My wife has cut her hair. Even shorter than I was expecting. I like it, but it’s going to take a LOT of getting used to. I’m not used to being able to see the back of her neck. For 11 years, I’ve been looking at beautiful, long hair. And now I have to get [...]
Charleton Heston Speaks for Gay Rights
Posted in Culture on February 27, 2004 | 3 Comments »
Charleton Heston, brash and outspoken lightning-rod of the right wing (and, not incidentally, President of the NRA), gave a speech entitled “Winning the Cultural War” to the Harvard Law School Forum, 5 years ago this month. The gist of the speech was the dangers of “political correctness”, but Heston makes the valid point that freedom [...]
More on the Passion: A Look at Where It Differs From the Gospels On Jews

This is a point by point look at where Gibson distorted the Gospel’s account of the role of Jews’ in Jesus’ death, as well as just being Biblical inaccurate. The beating of Jesus begins immediately upon his arrest, contrary to the Gospels. He is wrapped in chains, and at one point thrown off a bridge. [...]

Say Uncle points out that I’ve been woefully negligent in my dog blogging. I see he’s correct. A picture will have to do for now. “What are YOU lookin’ at?” (Since this picture was taken, he has broken his toe. So more current pictures feature a splint and a lampshade, neither of which is particularly [...]
Real Patriots

This is what real concern for national security looks like: Nearly 5,000 Transportation Department workers face a furlough on Monday, a possible result of two senators using an expiring highway bill to force House Republicans to accept a two month extension of an independent investigation of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. “We all have a [...]
Why the Passion about The Passion?

Normally, the site doesn’t get much email. The open comments seem to be sufficient to satisfy reader’s desire for conversation. Every once in a while, however, I write something that seems to strike a chord, and the email turns into a river of fire. My posts on The Passion have apparently struck such a chord. [...]
In Mourning Today

Today is a dark, dark day. Today is the day that my wife gets a half-day spa treatment. This isn’t a problem. But today is the day that she cuts off her hair. Mind you, she does this with my blessing, because what makes her happy (eventually) makes me happy, and she has wanted to [...]
